Triphala (The Three Fruits)

Bibhitaki in Triphala formula

Table of Contents

Triphala is an Ayurvedic formula consisting of three fruits from India: Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki. Each fruit has healing properties. When combined, they create a powerful rejuvenating tonic.

Triphala Ingredients

Haritaki (Terminalia chebulabelerica)

Haritaki, an essential Ayurvedic herb, forms the basis of the Triphala formula. Dr. David Frawley names it for its ability to eliminate disease.

The herb re-establishes balance by eliminating metabolic toxins, known as mala in Ayurveda, and harmonizes the entire system. By regulating the colon, the herb corrects both constipation and diarrhea. Haritaki improves absorption and digestion, prevents excessive discharges throughout the body, nourishes the brain and nervous system, enhances vision and voice, promotes longevity, and helps raise prolapsed organs.

Haritaki is used to create a sense of well-being energetically and emotionally. It is said to increase intelligence and wisdom and impart pure awareness.

Amalaki (Emblica officinalis)

Also known as Indian Gooseberry, Amalaki is the highest source of vitamin C found in nature, containing about 3000mg per berry. It is also one of the strongest rejuvenative tonics in Ayurveda (called Rasayanas) and is especially useful for the blood, bones, liver, and heart. Amalaki helps rebuild and maintain new tissue growth, increase red blood cell counts, and relieve inflammation of the stomach and colon. It improves appetite, clears the intestines, and helps regulate blood sugar. This herb also helps nourish the bones, clean the mouth, strengthen teeth, and promote hair and nail growth.

Bibhitaki, (Terminalia belerica)

Another powerful rasayana, Bibhitaki helps liquefy and expel growths, including parasites, from the digestive tract, urinary system, lungs, and colon. It is a tonic for the lungs and helps improve voice, vision, and hair growth. Bibhitaki is a strong laxative and astringent, cleansing the bowels while increasing tone and function. It also helps tone the stomach and increase appetite.

Medicinal Benefits of Triphala

Triphala is commonly used to balance digestion and revitalize the body. It removes blockages and toxins, leading to better nutrient absorption, nourishment, and overall revitalization. It’s useful for various conditions indicated by the fruits in the formula.

Triphala is beneficial for diarrhea and constipation. It is safe, gentle, and non-habit-forming, and promotes tissue health in the colon. Triphala benefits various systems, such as the circulatory, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, and nervous systems. Additionally, Triphala can help alleviate hemorrhoids, prolapse, poor appetite, stress, and inflammation, while also helping to control diabetes and cholesterol. When combined with a healthy diet and exercise, Triphala may aid in weight loss by improving digestion and suppressing cravings.

Externally, Triphala is used as a paste or wash as an effective astringent and anti-inflammatory. It is also used traditionally as a hair and eye wash.

How to use Triphala

The supplement is available in a variety of forms. It is available in a tablet, capsules, tincture, powder, and liquid extract form.

Traditionally, Triphala is taken as tea or an infusion. To make the tea, add half a teaspoon of the powder to a cup of hot water, stir, and allow it to cool before drinking. The taste is a strong mixture of sour, bitter, sweet, and sharp. If you find the taste unpleasant, you can add honey and/or milk. As time goes on, the taste seems to become smoother and more palatable, and some even find it slightly sweet.

The tea is best consumed once a day on an empty stomach. It can be taken at night before bed or first thing in the morning, after letting the powder infuse in the water overnight.

Triphala is commonly available in tablet form, which can be found at most natural food stores. Take 1000 mg at night before bed or first thing in the morning after waking up. Tablets are convenient for people who travel a lot or those who do not like the taste of Triphala tea.

Liquid extract/Tincture

Triphala is additionally obtainable in liquid kind as an extract or tincture. The suggested dosage is 30 drops, or one dropperful. Just add one dropperful of tincture to approximately one ounce of water or juice and drink on an empty stomach up to three times a day, or as recommended by a healthcare professional.
